Chandelier Size Calculator for Nigerian Homes

The short answer: add your room length and width in metres, multiply the total by 8.3, and that is your ideal chandelier diameter in centimetres. A 4m by 5m living room needs a fixture about 75cm wide. Fixture height should be roughly 22cm for every metre of ceiling height, and the bottom of the fixture should sit at least 210cm above the floor in an open room, or 150cm to 165cm above the floor when it hangs over a dining table. How the numbers are worked out

Every figure the calculator returns comes from one of the five rules below. They are the same rules a lighting designer uses when specifying a room, converted to metric and adjusted for the ceiling heights common in Nigerian builds.

1. Fixture width

Add the room length and width in metres, then multiply by 8.3 to get the fixture diameter in centimetres. A 6m by 4m living room gives 83cm. Over a dining table the rule changes: size the fixture to the table instead, at roughly the table width minus 30cm, so a 90cm wide table takes a 60cm fixture.

2. When one fixture is not enough

The width rule holds until a room runs past about 5m in either direction. Past that, a single fixture would have to be unreasonably large and the corners of the room still go dark. The answer is to zone the ceiling instead: divide the room into areas of no more than 5m by 5m, then size a fixture to each zone using the same rule. A 14m by 10m restaurant floor becomes six zones of roughly 4.7m by 5m, each taking a fixture around 80cm wide, which is exactly how restaurant ceilings are laid out in practice. Stairwells, foyers and dining tables are the exception and always take one statement piece.

3. Fixture height and hanging height

Over a dining table or a kitchen island the fixture hangs lower, because nobody walks under it. Allow 75cm to 90cm between the tabletop and the bottom of the fixture, which puts the bottom at about 150cm to 165cm from the floor for a standard 75cm table, or 165cm to 180cm for a 90cm island counter.

4. How much light the room actually needs

Multiply the floor area in square metres by the lux level for that room, then add 25 percent for every metre of ceiling above 2.7m, because light falls off with distance.

Decorative fixtures should carry roughly 60 percent of that total, capped at about 5,000 lumens per fixture. Anything left over is made up with recessed spotlights at around 600 lumens each. This is why a large living room almost always needs a chandelier plus spots, not a bigger chandelier.

5. Power and load

Modern LED fixtures produce about 100 lumens per watt, so a room needing 6,000 lumens draws roughly 60W. That matters in Nigeria for two reasons: it tells you the load your inverter or generator carries when the lights are on, and it tells you whether the fixture can run off an inverter at all. Almost every LED fixture in this catalogue can. Fixtures rated in the 100W to 210W range are usually large multi-head chandeliers.

The POP ceiling problem nobody warns you about

Most Nigerian homes finish the ceiling in POP, which is a decorative board suspended below the concrete slab. POP board carries almost no weight. A chandelier above about 8kg fixed into POP alone will eventually pull through, and the failure is sudden rather than gradual.

The fix is straightforward and should be agreed with your electrician before the fixture arrives. Anchor a steel backing plate or threaded rod into the concrete slab above, then bring the fixture mount down through the POP so the board carries only the cover plate. If the slab is not reachable, a timber noggin spanning the ceiling joists works for medium weights. For anything above 25kg, which covers most crystal and multi-tier chandeliers, the anchor should be specified before the ceiling is closed.

Two more things worth checking on any Nigerian install: confirm the fixture is rated for 220V to 240V at 50Hz, and put sensitive LED drivers behind a stabiliser if your supply swings, because voltage spikes kill drivers long before they kill the LEDs themselves.

Common questions

What size chandelier do I need for a 12 by 15 foot room?

That is roughly 3.7m by 4.6m, so 3.7 plus 4.6 equals 8.3, multiplied by 8.3 gives a fixture about 70cm in diameter. At a standard 3m ceiling the fixture should be about 65cm tall with its lowest point 210cm to 220cm above the floor.

How low should a chandelier hang over a dining table?

Between 75cm and 90cm above the tabletop. On a standard 75cm high table that puts the bottom of the fixture 150cm to 165cm from the floor. Go lower and it blocks eye contact across the table, go higher and the table stops feeling lit.

Can I hang a chandelier on a 2.4m ceiling?

Not a hanging one. Below about 2.45m there is no room to clear head height, so use a flush or semi-flush ceiling light instead. A semi-flush fixture gives you the decorative effect with only 25cm to 35cm of drop.

How many pendant lights do I need over a kitchen island?

Space them about 75cm apart and keep at least 15cm between the end pendant and the end of the island. In practice that means two pendants for an island under 1.8m and three for an island between 1.8m and 2.4m. Each pendant is usually 20cm to 40cm wide.

How many chandeliers does a large living room or restaurant need?

One fixture lights an area of about 5m by 5m well. Beyond that, zone the ceiling and give each zone its own fixture rather than scaling one fixture up. A 14m by 10m restaurant floor is usually six fixtures of about 80cm each, not one enormous piece.

What size chandelier works for a double height living room?

For ceilings above 4.5m use a cascading or linear chandelier sized to the stairwell or void rather than the floor plan, and align the bottom of the fixture with the first floor level so it reads correctly from both floors. Plan the cleaning access at the same time, because a fixture you cannot reach is a fixture that stays dusty.
